PORTRAIT IN CLAY
Fridays, 1-4 PM, $140/4 consecutive classes
February 3-March 30
This class will provide the student with a profound understanding of the structure of the human head in addition to those visualization tools that serve to deliver a likeness. Students will cast a paper mache skull from a detailed clay sculpture, which will then serve as a reusable armature from which multiple clay portraits will be realized. An Ecorche or muscle figure concept provides for a firm foundation for understanding the underlying tissue that influences form. Careful attention to detail will be focused on those structures as the mouth, the nose, the eye socket and theĀ ear. In addition to facial components, the anatomy of the neck and upper brachium will be included.structures Students will be provided with or can fabricate their own armatures designed specifically for building the skull and shoulders in clay. Starting from basic volumetric shapes, the head is then refined to full accuracy. The indivdual muscles are explained, function and shape are demonstrated and these lessons are then applied to the portrait.
Lectures on form and function are provided as well as ideas on the aesthetics of artistic anatomy.
Students will provide the non-sulfurated clay as suggested in the materials list as well as sculpting tools, drawing materials, and a sketchbook to monitor their progress. For a materials list click here
Students who have not previously studied at the Woodstock School of Art are required to pay a one time matriculation fee of fifteen dollars.
